Few games are easier to explain than Gomoku. Two players take turns putting stones of their color on a board, and whoever gets five in an unbroken line first wins. That line can run across, up and down or diagonally.
The board comes in two sizes: 15 by 15 for the modern competitive format and 19 by 19 for the traditional one. Its roots are traced back to ancient China, and today people play it worldwide, even in tournaments. The calm opening hides sharp tactics, because every stone can serve both attack and defense.
